We are a small, focused law firm, serving clients in the areas of Civil Litigation, Corporate Law, Family Law, Wills and Estates, Landlord and Tenant Board and Real Estate. While we believe most lawyers and law firms share the key values of our profession, we believe what makes us unique is our ability to provide the benefit of experience, knowledge, and cost effectiveness in one package. Our firm focuses on personal and interactive service; working with our clients rather than simply for our clients to obtain the desired results. With that said, we cannot be effective without the necessary knowledge to provide sound advice and innovative options. We continually upgrade our knowledge and skills and participate in training above and beyond the requirements of the profession. Giving our best advice means working only in areas in which we are trained and keeping current with the law. Whether it is training for our lawyers, or our staff, or researching new developments, the firm is committed to maintaining and strengthening our skills in an effort to better service our clients. We also understand that, although the client wants a champion, our obligations to our clients include the obligation of candid advice. We don't whitewash the issues. We believe our clients deserve to understand both the benefits which they might expect, as well as the risks they might encounter. Sometimes the client may not want to hear about the downside, but they must. We believe the client needs all the relevant information in order to assess their situation and provide us with reasoned and reasonable instructions. Finally, we believe in cost-effective service. We believe that clients should understand the costs involved in the process. In a residential real estate purchase or sale, it is fairly simple to estimate costs in advance. We generally provide clients with a written estimate when the file is taken on and we stick to the estimate unless something drastically unusual comes up. If it does, we immediately tell the client about it and that the fee may change. In commercial matters, we will often provide a range of costs fairly early on in the processing of the file. We often can't predict the issues until we are into the process and we are better able to understand the specific issues and the complexity of the matter as a whole. We understand that clients want to know "how much it will cost", however, so we do try to provide a range of costs and to update our estimates as the file develops. Litigation matters provide a much more difficult challenge in providing an estimate. This is because work is performed at an hourly rate, which is explained upfront and we report regularly to the client by way of detailed bills. The cost on a litigation file is often determined by the length of the court process, which is in turn influenced by the position taken by the parties. We believe that having the benefit of our knowledgeable advice will result in cost savings for our clients.
