Rakontur Information

rakontur is an Emmy®, Peabody® and Edward R. Murrow Award-winning independent studio founded in Miami by filmmakers Billy Corben and Alfred Spellman in 2000. We produce premium nonfiction for film, television and digital platforms. For more than 25 years, rakontur has told stories about crime, corruption, politics, sports, culture and the institutions that shape public life. Our films combine rigorous reporting and deep archival research with cinematic storytelling driven by unforgettable characters. Our work includes the Cocaine Cowboys franchise (Magnolia Pictures/Netflix); The U and Broke (ESPN 30 for 30); The Tanning of America: One Nation Under Hip Hop (VH1 Rock Docs), co-produced with Steve Stoute; Screwball (Netflix); 537 Votes (HBO), co-produced with Oscar winner Adam McKay’s Hyperobject Industries; God Forbid: The Sex Scandal That Brought Down a Dynasty (Hulu), also co-produced with Hyperobject Industries; Men of War (NEON); and From Russia with Lev (MSNBC Films), co-produced with Rachel Maddow’s Surprise Inside. Today, rakontur is bringing the same investigative rigor and cinematic ambition to YouTube and original digital media. We are developing new models for producing and distributing premium nonfiction. Our goal is to build direct relationships with audiences and create a lasting home for our growing body of work.
