Radioactive Waste Management Agency (RATA) is a state enterprise responsible for radioactive waste management in Lithuania. The main objective of RATA’s activities is to manage radioactive waste transferred to its responsibility, ensuring nuclear and radiation safety, and other operations in order to meet public interests. According the laws of the Republic of Lithuania and other legal acts RATA carries out the following activities: • operation of radioactive waste storage and disposal facilities and other radioactive waste management facilities under its responsibility; • management of waste taken over from radioactive waste producers; • design, construction or reconstruction of radioactive waste storage facilities, repositories and other radioactive waste management facilities, as well as decommissioning of the radioactive waste storage facilities and post-closure supervision of radioactive waste repositories; • participation in national and/or international-funded projects related to nuclear facility design, construction, reconstruction, operation, decommissioning, supervision of operation and decommissioning; • safety assessments for radioactive waste management facilities; • transportation of radioactive waste; • preparation of decontamination regulations for decontamination of non-nuclear facilities, land and buildings; • preparation of post-closure surveillance programs for radioactive waste repositories; • management of radioactive waste arising during radiological emergencies; • management of illegal radioactive materials and orphan sealed sources of ionizing radiation discovered in the Republic of Lithuania; • provision of information to public, competent state and local authorities about management of radioactive waste; • organization and coordination of R&D and introduction of new waste management technologies; • provision of consulting on radioactive waste management, co-operation with organizations in other countries in the field of radioactive waste management; • performance of other functions related to the management of radioactive waste. As management of the radioactive waste is directly related with the nuclear and radiation safety, RATA holds licences from State Nuclear Power Safety Inspectorate (VATESI) and Radiation Protection Centre (RSC).
