Doughty Street Chambers was set up in 1990 by thirty independent-minded barristers, aiming to break the mould of traditional chambers by moving out of the Inns of Court and setting new standards of professionalism and excellence in the legal world. Essex Court Chambers is a leading set of barristers' chambers specialising in commercial and financial litigation, arbitration, public law and public international law. Members of Chambers are recognised specialists in all areas of commercial law and handle disputes across the full spectrum of the business and financial world, including banking & finance, civil fraud, corporate/chancery & offshore, insurance & reinsurance, energy, trade, shipping, revenue, and employment. Chambers is not a firm, nor are its members partners or employees. Rather, Chambers contains the separate, self-contained offices of individual barristers, each self-employed and working separately. Indeed, (as in all specialist sets) individual barristers within Chambers are commonly retained by opposing sides in the same dispute, both in litigation and arbitration. As well as acting on opposing sides, individuals regularly appear in front of other members acting as Deputy Judges or Arbitrators.
