So great was the was the success of initial ventures, Mr. Oetama soon found himself turning to book and magazine publishing, printing and retailing. And so, in 1970 the very first Gramedia Bookstore (GBS) opened its doors for business in Jalan Gajah Mada, Jakarta. Business was good and expansion came rapidly. By 2006, Gramedia has 69 bookstores throughout the Indonesian archipelago with at least six more new stores slated to be opened in this year alone.
