Since 1911 the Dutch national heritage organisation "Bond Heemschut" is the private organisation for the protection of the historically built environment and cultural landscapes in the Netherlands. The organisation is independent from the government and derives its income mainly from its members and through donations. The organisation has 13 representations, in the 12 provinces and in the capital Amsterdam, and its activities are run by the members. Our main goal is to safeguard the historical dimension of our cities and our countryside for the benefit of a safe, diverse, meaningful, sustainable and liveable place to live, work and relax.

The Zaanse Schans is one of the most remarkable locations of the Netherlands. A unique heritage village from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries with its typical green houses, trades, crafts, warehouses and windmills from the Zaan region shows visitors the heyday of the first industrial area of Western Europe in all its glory. The Zaanse Schans was once constructed to preserve the timber construction of the Zaan region. This is shown throughout the area. Take the windmills along the river Zaan, they give the Zaanse Schans an iconic image. Tourists experience the Zaan region in 1850. The authentic Zaan timber architecture attracts many visitors to the Zaan region each year. They come in search of the unique stories of the Zaanse Schans. Visitors from all over the world enjoy a walk through the Zaanse Schans and learn more about the background of the buildings, windmills and crafts along the route. They admire many sights and discover enjoyable activities and visit several museums during their stay at the historical heritage. Tin casting is a manually performed craft. Sails for boats and windmills are woven in the weaver house “Het Wevershuis”. Craftsmen in traditional clothing demonstrate how barrels and tubs are made in the cooperage “De Kuiperij”. The demonstrations and stories of the crafts will bring the industrial time to life. Pay a visit to one of the windmills. The working wood-, saw, and oil mills will take visitors back in time.
