“Brio” means “full of life” and “geo” means “of the earth” — together they define who we are, what we do, and why we craft clean, high-performance haircare.
In 2013, our founder, Nancy Twine, began blending natural ingredients in her kitchen to create effective haircare for every hair type. Those kitchen-born formulas pioneered a new approach to clean — proving there's no need to compromise between high-integrity ingredients and high performance.
Since then, we’ve cultivated 50+ formulas that have powered hair transformations across 25 countries. From barrier-boosting scalp care to proven repair, hair-healthy stylers, everyday nourishment, and every need in between. You do the most for your hair, we do the most for its care.
Many women can sum up the relationship they have with their hair in one simple phrase: it’s complicated.
More than just a physical feature, hair is deeply personal. From style to cut to color, hair is a commitment. To some, it can be a source of frustration. To others, a point of pride. For most, it is a lifelong relationship filled with highs, lows, and everything in between.
At Design Essentials, we believe that everyone deserves to feel beautiful. Our products can give you the fresh start you need or keep you crowned with certainty through every step of your day. We are committed to helping you achieve your best hair because we know that beauty begins with confidence.
SheaMoisture: Black founded & Black Led
Certified B Corp Hair & skin care made with fair trade ingredients and love
SheaMoisture is the legacy of founder and CEO Richelieu Dennis’ grandmother Sofi, who sold handcrafted shea butter soaps and salves in Sierra Leone to support her family, after she was widowed at a young age. Sofi became known as a healer throughout the countryside, and taught her recipes to her Richelieu.
Nubian Heritage had its humble beginnings in Harlem. After graduating from college, Richelieu and his best friend, Nyema Tubman, began selling their culturally authentic creations in Harlem as street vendors. Guided by the legacy of ancient Nubia, the world's first melting pot, we remix global healing traditions into modern wellness solutions.
Though our purpose-driven Community Commerce business model, SheaMoisture ethically sources shea butter from 15 women’s co-ops in Northern Ghana. We don’t just buy the women’s raw materials — we help them develop self-sustaining businesses. An ethical wage premium is paid to these enterprising women, and they become our partners, not just our suppliers. With their rise in income, they experience greater health, access to education and the benefits of financial freedom.
