Project SMILE is a UC Berkeley student-run nonprofit organization that offers academic and emotional guidance to middle school students. We mentor at Longfellow Middle School in Berkeley, CA. Our mentors are role models for the Longfellow students and form strong relationships with them through bi-weekly mentoring and special weekend events. S.M.I.L.E. stands for Spreading Multiculturalism and Inspiring Leadership through Education. Our mission is to provide mentees and mentors with an opportunity to develop special relationships of respect, trust and support. Through one-on-one match-ups with students from Longfellow Middle School, Project S.M.I.L.E. seeks to promote and instill values such as the appreciation of diversity, leadership abilities, educational awareness, and a proactive sense of community. We hope to enhance the lives of both the mentees and mentors by creating a generation of motivated and inspirational leaders who are academically enlightened and socially adept.
