The Last Mile (TLM) is an Oakland, CA based organization whose mission is to provide opportunities for personal and professional growth for justice-impacted individuals through education and technology training.
We believe that having a job is the key to successful reentry and breaking the cycle of incarceration. A projected shortage of nearly 1 million software engineering jobs by 2020 means that these job skills will be in demand. Through in-prison software engineering training and continued mentorship post-release, The Last Mile bridges the gap between incarceration and freedom.
ProLiteracy believes every adult has a right to literacy. We develop and promote adult literacy learning,
content, programs and advocacy to help adult learners.
ProLiteracy works with our members and partners, and the adult learners we serve, along with local, national, and international organizations. ProLiteracy helps build the capacity and quality of programs that are teaching adults by:
• Advocating for public policies and legislation that benefit adult learners and the people and programs that serve them.
• Providing professional development and training, technical assistance, publications, online resources, and credentialing services for program directors, instructors, trainers, and volunteer tutors working with adult learners in the U.S.
• Working internationally with existing nongovernmental agencies to create programs that combine native language literacy lessons with community projects related to the environment, economic self-sufficiency, education, health, family literacy, and peace/conflict resolution.
• Publishing educational materials that address the learning needs and difficulties of adult learners and of youths in grades 6-10. ProLiteracy produces the only weekly news source written in plain English.
• Sponsoring an biennial conference.
ProLiteracy is the result of the 2002 merger of Laubach Literacy International and Literacy Volunteers of America.
Free Minds Book Club & Writing Workshop builds community to foster personal development and systems change for justice-involved youth and adults through the literary arts, workforce development, trauma healing, peace-building, and member-led advocacy.
