The प्रragya group (http://pragya.ai) is a research group at BITS Goa led by Pro. Amitava Das. प्रragya is committed to civilizing future-generation machines—guiding AI systems beyond raw computational power toward wisdom, responsibility, and ethical discernment. While Responsible AI dominates contemporary discussions on ethical AI development, प्रragya advances this discourse through its novel CIVILIZING AI framework. This framework establishes quantifiable, actionable standards for AI alignment and safety, defined by four key metrics: (i) the AI Detectability Index (ADI), measuring how transparently and eloquently AI reveals its artificial nature; (ii) the Hallucination Vulnerability Index (HVI), quantifying susceptibility to factual errors; (iii) the Adversarial Attack Vulnerability Index (AAVI), assessing resilience to prompt injection and adversarial inputs; and (iv) the Carbon Emission Index (CarbonAI), evaluating the environmental footprint of AI training and inference. Complementing these metrics is प्रragya’s pioneering Neural DNA (nDNA) framework, which offers a profound lens through which to study the life cycle of foundation models—not as static artifacts of training, but as evolving semantic organisms. Through nDNA, we uncover how models inherit, mutate, and transmit cultural priors, latent beliefs, and alignment traits, enabling a shift from engineering isolated systems to cultivating living semantic entities that align with constitutional values, cultural contexts, and societal trust. Together, these initiatives define प्रragya’s mission: to foster AI systems that are not only technically advanced but also humane, transparent, and harmonized with the principles that underpin a just and sustainable future.
