Battery technology has now progressed to such a stage that electricity has become the ideal alternative propulsion fuel for inland barges. PortLiner is the first and only supplier of zero emission propulsion in inland shipping. The breakthrough PortLiner concept is to “containerize” powerful batteries. The “E-Powerboxes” are positioned on board and connected to electro engines; after use, they are swapped for fully charged Boxes, and re-charged and used again. Four E-Powerboxes give an 110x11.45m container vessel an action radius of at least 23 hours. These ships can easily cover the Amsterdam / Rotterdam / Antwerp / Duisburg area. In the near future, PortLiner foresees the introduction of hydrogen as a complementary energy source for inland shipping, in combination with batteries.
