Port Edward is the site of the North Pacific Cannery Village Museum. The area has been home to a number of fish canneries and processing plants for over one hundred years. This industry has brought together people from all over the world, and has played an important role in the development of the area as we know it today. The North Pacific Cannery Village Museum, operated by the North Pacific Cannery Village Museum Society, seeks to preserve this aspect of the area's history. The cannery was built in 1889, and continued to operate until 1968. In 1985 it was designated a National Historic Site, and has been a museum since then. There are traces of some of the other 200 canneries that operated here in the heyday of the fishing industry. A few kilometers before North Pacific there is a sign that marks the site of the Inverness Cannery. Beyond North Pacific is Cassiar Cannery, a privately owned site.
