Phuket Beach Cleanup Information

If you've been in Thailand for more than a few days, you will soon come to realize that almost everything comes in a bag ( although this does seem to be getting better ). There is also the issue of people just throwing rubbish on the street, without giving a thought of where it goes next. Before, locals wrapped everything in banana leaves, which could biodegrade in the forests. Now, there is still this mentality of simply throwing away plastic bags, toothbrushes, beer tins, and other trash into the streets. This inevitably lands up in the ocean. Ocean trash then ends up on those beautiful Thailand beaches and in the stomach, around the head of, and in the gills of marine life. You can make a change! We started carrying garbage bags and gloves in my car in Cape Town, South Africa in 2010 and since then, I have collected hundreds of kilograms of ocean trash, even having some of my birthdays start out with everyone cleaning up the beach for an hour before festivities begin. While cleaning these beaches, I’ve met many other travelers and locals who are interested in what I am doing. Many people decide to join when they know just how simple it is. All you need is a bag, some gloves and some time. It's really that simple!
