Peter Gregson Information

Peter Gregson is an award winning cellist and pioneer of contemporary music, reinvigorating the classical genre. From performances in churches, to web-based recitals and free-standing events in warehouses, his aim is to disrupt the pulse of contemporary music and engage the “born digital” generation. This has been recognized in being awarded the 2008 Glenfiddich Spirit of Scotland award for music, and more recently, membership to the Courvoisier Future 500. He has collaborated with many of the most exciting composers writing today, including Martin Suckling, Monica Max West, Artem Vassiliev, Patrick Nunn, Milton Mermikides, Joby Talbot, Howard Goodall, Richard Sisson, John Metcalfe, Max Richter, Philip Sheppard, Thomas Hewitt Jones, Nigel Morgan and Jenny Olivia Johnston. Peter was the cellist on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s revolutionary HyperBow project, a part of Tod Machover’s HyperInstrument group, for which he recorded a CD/DVD of new works. He also participated on Stanford’s SoundWIRE project with their CCRMA lab. He recorded his debut album, SPEM, at the Banff Center in Canada in February 2008. His second album, Factory, was commissioned by New Media Scotland for performance alongside Mutsugoto in July 2009. Peter has recently recorded an album for the Peter Gabriel and Bowers & Wilkins Society of Sound Real World Studios, featuring a binaural recording of Steve Reich’s Cello Counterpoint. It is set for release in early 2010. He was the solo cellist on Howard Goodall’s Gramaphone award winning album, The Enchanted Voices. Enchanted Carols will be released at the end of November 2009. Peter Gregson plays a 1987 Colin Irving acoustic cello and a blue five string electric cello made for him by Eric Jensen in Seattle.
