Algorithms when humans are involved. We study algorithms that are trained with human behavior and platforms that interact with, or impact, people. Toward a healthier web, our current focus is on algorithmic presentation at digital services---via ranking and recommendation algorithms alike, that make inferences from human interaction with learning algorithms in a feedback loop in the face of inevitable sampling biases and cognitive biases. We help de-biasing inferences, turning any process of algorithmic presentation---from the ones based on simple statistics to sophisticated ranking and recommender algorithms, into an actual experiment. Implications are absorbing. For instance, digital marketplaces can enhance user experience, and establish a fair environment for merchants at the same time, more importantly, ensure the long-term health of the platform.
