PBD Biotech develops Actiphage, a blood test that detects live Mycobacteria, the cause of tuberculosis (TB) in humans and bovine TB and Johne's Disease in animals. One quarter of the world’s population is infected with latent tuberculosis (LTBI), and for one in ten of these people it will progress to active TB disease. As Actiphage detects the presence of active infection, it has potential for a screening test for the disease and to improve drug management. Mycobacteria also cause the diseases bovine TB and Johne's Disease in animals, and these are economically disasterous. Actiphage is available now to test for these diseases using a sample of blood or milk. Unlike most widely used diagnostics that depend on the animal's immune response, Actiphage detects the presence of the pathogen, providing a yes/no result before clinical symptoms are present.
