Origin Story:
I used to be a member of a large metropolitan inventors group, where I kept hearing inventors complain about how expensive patents and patent lawyers are, and how complicated the process is for the those with little experience of it. I started to look into the details and discovered that ~80% of any patent is technical writing and drawing and not lawyering, however patent lawyers often use their interns to do this work, and yet charge lawyer rates. (4-5x what I charge) Then I encountered the provisional application system for US utility patents and realized that as a technician and technical writer, this is something I could do just as well or better than interns, and without dipping into areas that actually require legal expertise (such as patent claims). A provisional application needs to be comprehensive and thorough in order to capture all possible invention variations in order to provide the applicant with the best opportunity for surviving the examination process. My clients are always surprised at how much detail and structure I provide while thoroughly documenting all aspects of their invention. Twice I have updated my skills by graduating from IPLegalEd's Patent Paralegal certificate program with final marks in the mid 90s. I have been writing provisional applications, performing patent searches and creating patent drawings for almost 20 years.
