Oyama Zipline is committed to helping the community in which it operates. The management recently set a goal of attracting 100 people who would zipline for Parkinsons superWalk. Nicknamed "SuperZip" the fundraiser is a huge success. The Superwalk official website tracks progress and shows team Oyama Zipline Forest Adventure already at 111% of their goal. "Oyama Zipline has committed to a Community Care Program", explains Tanis Kuntz, who manages the program for the mountainside attraction above Kalamalka and Wood Lakes. Oyama Ziplilne Forest Adventure regularly donates part of the proceeds from zipline admissions to local and national fundraising programs. The Parkinson Society charitable organization is a good partner for Oyama Zipline. Parkinsons Disease is a condition that hits close to home for many. Tanis lost her father, Ed Hubner (a lifelong resident of Vernon) to Parkinson's Disease in 2011. The Parkinsons Society is so valuable. It was comforting to have a trusted source of information. The disease is also a reality for the Madsen family (who own and operate Oyama Zipline midway between Kelowna and Vernon). Jennifer Madsens mother, Verna, was diagnosed last year. "The SuperZip fundraiser is very personal. We are proud to be a part of the national event to raise funds for research into the causes of Parkinson's and more effective treatments. Money is raised for education and support services, not only for people with Parkinson's, but for their caregivers and family members too," says Jennifer Madsen. Jennifer's mother, Verna, was diagnosed last year. Verna is 68 years young, and is now limited in the things she can do. "It really challenges the people around her to watch her have to focus so hard to do simple things like bring a spoon to her mouth... the tremors take over," says Jennifer. "While we are hopeful that the disease will not progress too rapidly, we wonder how much quality time is left ... and a diagnosis like this it just makes you realize how mortal we all are.
