Oxford Medical Diagnostics develops breath analysis technologies for rapid, accurate, and low-cost monitoring of diseases and metabolic functions. Using it's Cavity Enhanced Absorption Spectroscopy (CEAS) technology, the company has developed a compact, portable sensor for the detection of breath acetone which is a direct marker of circulating blood ketone levels. This technology will be applied in 2 key areas: 1. Diabetes healthcare: Uncontrolled diabetes can lead to elevated blood ketone levels and to a condition known as diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA); a potentially fatal condition and the main cause of mortality in Type 1 diabetics. Oxford Medical Diagnostics aims to develop an early warning breath test, primarily for Type 1 diabetics, to prevent the onset of DKA and mitigate hospitalisations and associated costs. 2. The wellness market: Obesity is a huge economic burden attributed to some £47bn of UK economy. Weight-loss programmes aimed to reduce obesity levels often suffer from high drop-out rates because conventional measurement techniques (weighing scales, body fat analysers etc.) provide limited information about changes to metabolism. Since blood ketone levels are indicative of the level of fat consumption by the body, Oxford Medical Diagnostics aims to position their breath acetone device as a motivational tool for those on diet and exercise programmes, providing a measure of the impact a given regimen has on their rate body fat metabolism. The Company aims to market cheap, compact devices to address these areas in the coming 3 years.
