Some spaces just feel different the moment you walk in. OUTPOST has had that quality since 2004, when eight artists in Norwich decided to stop waiting and start doing. Taking inspiration from Glasgow's Transmission Gallery and backed by the energy of EASTinternational - one of England's most exciting annual exhibitions at the time - they built a space on a simple principle: artists run it, artists show in it, and everyone gets in for free. Two decades later, the principle hasn't changed. What has changed is the scale of what's been achieved. Over 150 exhibitions. Hundreds of artists platformed. Turner Prize winners and nominees through the door. A studio complex that housed 85 artists and practitioners in the heart of Norwich. A volunteer committee that has turned over and renewed itself again and again, bringing fresh perspectives and keeping the space genuinely alive. OUTPOST is also something quieter and harder to measure: a community. A place where artists at the very start of their careers have shown alongside established names. Where audiences who'd never visited a gallery before have found work that stayed with them. Where the act of showing up, as an artist, a volunteer, a visitor, has always meant something. The gallery is registered charity #FBF696 - a name that references the distinctive yellow HTML colour code OUTPOST has used since day one. If you've ever been part of this - as an artist, a volunteer, a visitor - we'd love to reconnect. And if you're new here, welcome. Follow us to see what's happening and how to get involved.
