Affordable medicine for all. Linux for drugs. Open Source Pharma Foundation seeks to create affordable new medicines in areas of public health need. We do so by using open source methodologies of computation, collaboration, crowdsourcing, transparency, and open intellectual property. Our goal is to cut costs by 90% and development time by 50% against the standard big pharma model. With a focus on neglected diseases, we will address areas where big pharma finds an insufficient market incentive to develop new cures. Our initial project – the world’s first open source clinical trial, seeking to repurpose existing generic drugs against tuberculosis, which kills more people than any other infectious disease in the world. Funders of the movement include the Rockefeller, Soros, and Tata philanthropies, and the Geneva-based Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB, and Malaria (total of approx. $3.5M).
