Open Country was founded in Tokyo by a group of friends who came together with a few key ambitions in mind: Create a space to showcase, share, and offer access to Japan's hiking trails, to build an inclusive community that can support those wanting to explore the outdoors, and to make hiking fun and accessible to all. Japan is a country built for hiking. Around 80% of Japan’s land mass is mountains (ref.), and the folks that scale these mountains keep them in pristine conditions; the only real downfall is the lack of clear information and guidance for non-Japanese-speaking adventurers. So that’s where we step in. We write articles about hiking trails, take photos, and run tours and excursions (see our tours page). But we wanted to create something more than just a transactional tour company because, for us, the experience of hiking is so much more than just getting from A to B and back. - Hiking is an opportunity to escape the city and appreciate its proximity to such incredible untouched nature. - Hiking is a time to disconnect from daily life's routines and reconnect with the world in a more macro sense. - Hiking is a chance to build relationships, go deep into conversations, bond, and spend time in complete, comfortable silence. - Hiking is a moment to reflect and also an opportunity to clear your mind completely. Basically, the beauty of hiking is whatever you make it, so let's make it inspiring, rewarding, and fun. Follow us on Insta here: https://www.instagram.com/_opencountry_/
