THE AMAZON ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE (IPAM) is a non-profit, independent research, policy and outreach organization that has worked over the past 16 years towards achieving sustainable development in the Amazon region in a way that reconciles people’s economic aspirations and social justice with the maintenance of the functional integrity of tropical forest landscapes. "Science and Education for an environmentally healthy, economically prosperous and socially just Amazon Forest." Made up of scientists and educators, the remit of IPAM was to address three problems that threaten the survival of the forest and its people: degraded landscape, non-sustainable economies and social injustice. To that effect, another important premise of IPAM, which still cuts across its main work, is the idea that solutions to the problems arising for Amazon region shall, necessarily, include the active participation of people living in the region, especially the forest people: indigenous, extractivists, rivers village and maroons, among others. Throughout the history of IPAM, that style of science was based on the concept of participatory research by measuring and assessing both from the point of view of scientific research, environment conservation and community. Regarding community work, IPAM express deep concern about social organization. In collaboration with 87 employees in eight offices/research unities, we work to provide information and encourage initiatives to support public policies, local initiatives and international agreements. Our actions are taken with the involvement of householders, farmers, indigenous peoples, traditional communities and various government sectors. IPAM’s activities and researches are carried out by experts of academic excellence through four major research programs.
