50% of coral reefs have been lost in the past 30 years from climate change, and many estimates are that we will lose 90% by mid century. (source: bbc.com/news/world-australia-54533971) These ecosystems support 20% of marine biodiversity and provide many billions of dollars worth of ecosystem services, so we cannot afford to lose them. The marine biology community has identified coral genotypes with the ability to grow in the ocean conditions we anticipate in the future, and believe that if these coral could be grown in sufficient quantities and placed back on reefs, they could enable reefs to adapt more quickly to our changing oceans and preserve ecosystem function. Unfortunately, growing coral is very expensive and labor-intensive, which has prevented current initiatives from being able to restore significant reef area. Onda is developing new technology and applying techniques from mass manufacturing and agriculture to dramatically reduce total costs. This will enable reef restoration at scale and help secure a healthy and biodiverse future for our oceans.
