CAN in Automation (CiA) is the international users’ and manufacturers’ group for the CAN network (Controller Area Network), internationally standardized in the ISO 11898 series. The nonprofit association was established in 1992. The aim is to provide an unbiased platform for future developments of the CAN protocol and to promote the image of the CAN technology.
CiA supports all CAN applications from road vehicles via industrial machine control to medical devices and lift control systems. CiA is highly committed to international standardization submitting its specifications to international and national standardization bodies such as ISO and IEC as well as SAE and DIN, for example.
CiA provides seminars and other education opportunities. Additionally, CiA organizes the international CAN Conference (iCC). Other services include the publication of the CAN Newsletter magazine and its online sister (https://www.can-newsletter.org).
The OPC Foundation is dedicated to ensuring interoperability in automation by creating and maintaining open specifications that standardize the communication of acquired process data, alarm and event records, historical data, and batch data to multi-vendor enterprise systems and between production devices. Production devices include sensors, instruments, PLCs, RTUs, DCSs, HMIs, historians, trending subsystems, alarm subsystems, and more as used in the process industry, manufacturing, and in acquiring and transporting oil, gas, & minerals.
PROFIBUS & PROFINET International (PI) is the world's leading industry association and an active community for the standardization and dissemination of industrial networking technologies. Many of these are fundamental to realizing digitalization, automation, and Industry 4.0.
With its core technologies PROFIBUS, PROFINET, IO-Link, MTP, omlox and SRCI, PI is responsible for the development of market-leading, open standards for all fields of application in industrial manufacturing.
Supported by 23 regional PI associations (RPAs) all over the world, 1,800 member companies, and more than 10,000 different products, PI covers all key markets of industrial automation like factory automation, process automation, motion control and safety-related applications. As of 2024, more than 68 million PROFIBUS nodes, 69 million PROFINET nodes, and 50 million IO-Link nodes are installed worldwide! PI manages the entire value chain of industrial communication innovation, including tools for automated testing, nine accredited test centers, and product certification.
PI is continuously expanding its technology portfolio and works closely together with other industry organizations.
