Ockam was founded in 2017 around a simple conviction: distributed systems need to Build Trust before they can scale. Our team of more than 20 people built an open source cryptographic identity and messaging fabric that enabled applications to establish identity, mutually authenticate, and communicate through end to end encrypted channels across networks, clouds, and protocols. The Ockam project grew into a global open source community with thousands of GitHub stars and hundreds of contributors. Its cryptographic protocols underwent an extensive independent review by Trail of Bits and were evaluated by security and engineering teams at dozens of enterprise scale companies. As software began shifting toward autonomous systems, we extended that work into Autonomy, a platform as a service for operating long running swarms of autonomous AI agents. Across both products, the underlying idea remained the same. Software systems need identity, secure communication, and verifiable trust before people and institutions can depend on them. Ockam raised $17.5 million from leading venture and strategic investors before dissolving in July 2026. The company has come to an end, but the open source work and the philosophy behind Build Trust continue.
