The New York Power Authority (NYPA) is the largest state public power organization in the U.S., founded in 1931 with the mission to harness the State’s natural resources to provide reliable power at a low cost. NYPA generates nearly a quarter of New York State’s electricity and operates one‑third of its transmission lines. More than 80 percent of NYPA’s power comes from clean, emissions‑free hydropower, supporting the state’s progress toward a sustainable energy future. As a public entity governed by New York State rather than private investors, NYPA exists to advance the public interest and is primarily self‑funded through the sale of the electricity it produces—not taxpayer dollars. Its operations span electricity generation and storage, statewide transmission, customer services and partnerships, and oversight of the New York State Canal Corporation as a subsidiary. NYPA’s diverse customer base includes businesses, non‑profits, government facilities, and local municipal utilities across the state.
We're leading the charge toward a carbon‑free, economically vibrant New York, and now, we’re leading boldly into the future of energy with new initiatives including advanced nuclear energy development. At the same time, we're scaling renewable energy sources such as offshore wind, solar and battery storage initiatives.
Beyond energy, we're also revitalizing the iconic New York State Canal System, boosting upstate economies and supporting local communities.
At NYPA, our people are at the heart of our success. Their dedication and ingenuity have earned us national recognition as a Forbes Best Midsize Employer and as a top workplace for new grads and engineers. This reflects our commitment to fostering an innovative, inclusive and rewarding workplace.
At NYPA, we’re not just keeping the lights on—we’re lighting the way to a stronger, cleaner, more resilient future for all New Yorkers.

The California Independent System Operator (ISO) manages the flow of electricity across the high-voltage, long-distance power lines that make up 80 percent of California's power grid. We safeguard the economy and well-being of 30 million Californians by "keeping the lights on" 24/7.
As the impartial grid operator, the California ISO opens access to the wholesale power market that is designed to diversify resources and lower prices. It also grants equal access to 25,865 circuit-miles of power lines and reduces barriers to diverse resources competing to bring power to customers.
The California ISO's function is often compared to that of air traffic controllers. It would be grossly unfair for air traffic controllers to represent one airline and profit from allowing that company's planes to go through before others. In the same way, the California ISO operates independently—managing the electron traffic on a power grid we do not own—making sure electricity is safely delivered to utilities and consumers on time and reliably.
PJM Interconnection manages the high-voltage electric system that provides power to 67 million people in all or parts of 13 states and the District of Columbia. It's the largest power grid in North America.
As a neutral, independent party, PJM administers a competitive wholesale electricity market. PJM’s long-term regional planning process provides a broad, interstate perspective that identifies the most effective and cost-efficient improvements to the grid to ensure reliability and economic benefits.
PJM serves all or parts of Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia.
An independent board oversees PJM’s activities. Effective governance and a collaborative stakeholder process help PJM achieve its vision: “To be the electric industry leader – today and tomorrow – in reliable operations and efficient wholesale markets.”
