Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have surged in popularity over the past several years due to their ease of use in operations such as surveillance, agriculture, natural disasters and package delivery. A special class of fixed-wing UAVs are Unmanned Aerial Gliders (UAGs) which, like their manned counterparts, utilize their aerodynamic design to exploit atmospheric energy to gain lift. This provides advantages over conventional fixed-wing platforms in the form of improved flight time and range, which results in prolonged operation. Autonomous or semi-autonomous operation of UAVs is generally desirable to facilitate their usage in the field. Notos Technologies has the first complete system to enable autonomous soaring by generating a dynamic map of lift sources (thermals) in the atmosphere, and uses this map for online flight planning and decision making. Notos technologies system keeps commercial UAGs in the air without using a motor, by autonomously finding and catching rides on naturally occurring thermals, similar to how birds stay aloft. Notos Technologies make it possible for drones to increase their range and endurance by 10x compared to currently available commercial solutions.
