The primary aim is to provide independent assurance, information and advice to the Northern Ireland Assembly: on the proper accounting for Northern Ireland departmental and certain other public expenditure, revenue, assets and liabilities; and about Economy, Efficiency and Effectiveness of the use of resources. To achieve this aim the NIAO applies professional auditing standards. The NIAO provides this assurance by means of (a) financial audit and (b) value for money audit.
