Norfolk Urban Outreach Ministry Inc Information

Norfolk Urban Outreach Ministry (NUOM) was officially established on January 1st, 1975 and was originally located on Colley Avenue in Norfolk, VA. It's mission statement was and continues to be; "To meet the needs of the people of the greater urban community whose needs can not be met by existing agencies and resources," has been the goal of the Norfolk Urban Outreach Ministry since its inception in 1975. It initially offered referral services and counseling to "persons of the street" and members of the community with no religious affiliation. It operated primarily in downtown Norfolk. It also had a crisis team of volunteers to respond to emergency or disaster situations. In the fall of 1992, NUOM moved to its current location at 972 Norfolk Square, Norfolk VA. Continuing evaluation of NUOM's programs has resulted in a streamlined organization that can move quickly to address special needs. NUOM has remained independent of city, state and federal grants, preferring to maintain a broad base of community support. This has proven to be successful for NUOM, allowing it the flexibility to adjust to the direct needs of the community without the restrictions imposed by grants and government funding. Additionally Norfolk Urban Outreach Ministry, in conjunction with the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development( HUD), has sponsored four housing complexes for extremely low income elderly residents: Tucker House I and II in Norfolk, Magnolia Gardens in Suffolk, and Trinity Woods in Emporia. To best serve these housing complexes, a sister corporation, Partners In Management, a HUD certified management company, was created to oversee the operations of these facilities.
