My company is just me. Its activities vary with my personal interests and beliefs, but the connection is a strong focus on people and their various and complex ways of working together. I've found that practically everything we do in organisations boils down to a desire to reduce uncertainty - on every level. Most of our management practices and organisational structures are based on this desire. But in a world that gets more connected every second and becomes less predictable because of that, we find that traditional management approaches are failing, often at great cost to individuals and society. Luckily, people everywhere are beginning to realise that in order to cope with the complexity all around us, we should probably not try to oversimplify things to make them fit our outdated mental models. Rather, we should change our mental models to appreciate, deal with and use that complexity. It's not hard, but it does require a new way of thinking. All around me I can see the frustration with the way things are. We may be efficient, but we could be much more effective and fulfilled. I sense that we're on the brink of a new wave in management and policy that will bring tools that and methods that naturally fit our human condition. I am trying to navigate people and organisations towards that wave in such a way that it will bring them further and not drown them. (For those of you allergic to happy-clappy stuff, the approach is actually very down to earth.)
