The Center for Dark Energy Biosphere Investigations (C-DEBI) was a National Science Foundation (NSF) funded Science and Technology Center (STC). The Center began in 2010 with the mission to explore life beneath the seafloor and make transformative discoveries that advance science, benefit society, and inspire people of all ages and origins. C-DEBI research focused on the discovery of the microbial life below the ocean floor in rocks and sediments (the deep biosphere) that make up 70% of our planet’s surface. C-DEBI supported research by and training of academic faculty, research scientists, post-doctoral researchers, graduate students, undergraduate students, high school students, educators, and others through various grants, fellowships, professional development workshops and summer programs.
