The World Health Organisation has declared Delhi as the City with the worst air quality in the World. In fact, the entire Indo-Gangetic plain has very poor quality air, with the desert in the East and the Himalayas in the North, we are essentially trapped in a bowl of air with high particulates. The one’s under 2.5 microns are most scary and these result from combustion and hence are carcinogenic. Combined that with the fact that our body is unable to filter anything smaller than 2.5 microns. So these carcinogenic particles enter our lungs and eventually our blood stream and effect the heart, brain, lungs, fertility, and rankly almost every organ in our body. With less than 7 good air quality days in Delhi over the past 2 years, as per the standards established by the WHO, this is a public health crisis. To give you some perspective, we drink 2-3 liters of water a day, while we inhale between 10,000 – 12,000 liters of toxic air. In addition, we have no regulations on our construction and interior material suppliers and hence our indoor spaces are 5-10 times more polluted than the outdoor air due to off-gassing.
