Located in St-Honoré, 13 km north of Saguenay City, Niobec Mine has been producing niobium since 1976. Acquired by Magris Resources in January 2015, Niobec is still the only underground niobium mine, and one of only three producers on the world stage. The mine supplies about 8-10% of world use. Niobium is a metal that is initially processed into ferroniobium, and then used not only to increase the strength of steel, but also lower its weight. Niobec’s ferroniobium is used in large-scale steel mills and foundries, and destined to the automotive, aeronautical and petrochemical industries, as well as pipeline, bridge, and architectural structures.
