The Niagara Escarpment Biosphere (NEB), one of Canada’s most scenic landforms, has been recognized with the rare United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Biosphere. This 450-million-year-old, fossil-rich, forested ridge spans 725 km from Queenston near Niagara Falls to Tobermory at the tip of the Bruce Peninsula. The NEB encompasses two major biomes, 37 regions/municipalities, and a number of other diverse natural and urban environments. The Niagara Escarpment Biosphere is undergoing a governance transition; from being run by a regulatory body to a non-governmental organization. An elected Transitional Leadership Committee (TLC) is working with the former governing body, the Niagara Escarpment Commission (NEC), to ensure a smooth transition while improving stakeholder engagement. Indigenous inclusion and priorities of the NEB Indigenous communities will be a main area of focus in renewed governance. The goal of renewed governance is to connect people to the benefits of the biosphere by creating opportunities for greater collaboration and a sense of shared responsibility. The NEB web site and social media platforms are under construction. The NEB LinkedIn page will serve as an initial communication and information hub to connect and engage NEB stakeholders while the NEB’s governance model transitions. Stay connected to learn more about the NEB community and unique and diverse biosphere!
