The Newton Auxiliary Police are a volunteer group consisting of 25 officers in Newton, Massachusetts. While completely volunteer, the Auxiliary Police are directed by and report up through the Newton Police Department and serve the Department and City of Newton in a variety of ways. The Newton Auxiliary Police Force was first started in the 1960s as part of the Civil Defense Act. To this day, the Auxiliary Police Department still remains true to its original intent. Auxiliary officers can regularly been seen working crowd and traffic control at special events, and also during natural disasters and other inclement weather. Additionally the Auxiliary Police patrol the city in marked cruisers to assist full-time police officers and as "extra eyes and ears." The presence of the Auxiliary Police, in uniform, on patrol in marked police units has been proven to reduce vandalism and other crimes within the community. The Auxiliary Police are a constant and welcome sight to both citizens and the full-time law enforcement personnel.
