New Horizons Care Corporation (NHCC) has been created through a collaboration of best practices in project coordination and management; design, development, and construction; and operations management. The pooled resources of the Team ensure the delivery of holistic, safe, competent, compassionate, and ethical care. The Team members of New Horizons Care Corporation share a common philosophy, mission, values, beliefs and policies with regards to the provision of services. Construction was complete March 17, 2008 for the new 94 bed residential care facility, "New Horizons Community of Care", here in Campbell River. This is an $18 million facility developed by New Horizons Care Corporation. New Horizons, in cooperation with the BC Ministry of Health and the Vancouver Island Health Authority, are working together to meet the complex care needs of seniors through the Residential Care and Assisted Living Capacity Initiative. The three story, 67,000 square foot noncombustible building is located at 850 - 14th Avenue. Nestled among a variety of seniors affordable and supportive housing and Ironwood Place, the new 54 unit assisted living and adult day program complex, makes it an ideal location to create a true campus of care where seniors can age in place. The 94 beds of the facility are allocated for 20 dementia clients such as those afflicted with Alzheimer's disease and 6 geriatric mental health clients in special care secure units. An additional 60 VIHA funded beds are provided for general complex care clients, while another 8 complex care beds are available for private pay clients. The dementia special care unit has an open floor design which promotes the opportunity of residents to safely wander and mobilize in a social friendly environment. The second and third floors have 32 units each with two double rooms to accommodate couples aging together. A unique aspect of the facility is its children's daycare centre. Multigenerational social interaction is supported through story-time and interactive play. Large garden areas decorate the perimeter of the building while also serving as functional sources of fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs. These gathering places promote important social interaction and a source of life and growth. This is a "living" facility where the focus is living the highest quality of life within one's functional abilities. Activities will be encouraged that are typical of daily living and "Keeping It Normal (KIN)". The KIN principle associated with lifestyle and self-care directs the normalized, resident-centred delivery of care and services and concentrates attention on the uniqueness of the individual.
