The NCLC was established in 2000 as a credentialing board of the nonprofit Professional Medical Education Association, which itself was formed in 1978 and is primarily involved with medical laser training of all types in every medical/surgical specialty (See www.LaserTraining.org). The NCLC was originally established as the NCLE (National Council on Laser Excellence) and the name changed in 2011 to the NCLC as its own stand alone nonprofit organization. The policy of the NCLC is to work cooperatively with States and other regulatory agencies to provide verification of credentials and levels of knowledge in the various laser areas where the NCLC offers Certifications, and to cooperate with these agencies to transmit information regarding the Certification status of it's members. NCLC Certifications elsewhere are considered a desirable professional credential, and various States are moving toward requirements for such Certifications.
