NarrowNet pioneered the Sigfox network in Portugal. We deployed nationwide a new type of wireless network, exclusively dedicated to the Internet of Things and provided coverage to more than 90% of the population and 75% of territory, in mainland Portugal. The vast majority of things – from smoke detectors and smart meters to trash bins – have limited communication requirements and only small amounts of data need to be sent, e.g., position, orientation, temperature, inventory data, movement or battery status. This kind of network is dedicated to providing long-range, low-throughput, cost-effective and energy-efficient connectivity that is perfectly suited for this type of communication. It eliminates cost and energy-use barriers, enabling wide adoption of the IoT and greatly extends the battery and service life of connected devices. Currently deployed or being rolled-out in 60 countries, today Sigfox is the only IoT-dedicated connectivity solution commercially available that guarantees a high level of service and reliability on an international scale. In June 2019 the Sigfox network in Portugal was acquired by Towerlink, a Portuguese company fully owned by Cellnex Telecom, the main infrastructure operator for wireless telecommunication in Europe.
