The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (SWT) is a pioneering conservation organisation protecting wildlife and safeguarding habitats across Kenya. Founded in 1977 by Dr Dame Daphne Sheldrick DBE in memory of her husband, the renowned naturalist and Tsavo East National Park Warden David Sheldrick, SWT has grown from a pioneering elephant orphan rescue programme into a multi-dimensional conservation organisation addressing the greatest threats facing Kenya’s wildlife and wild spaces. SWT is best known for its Orphans’ Project, which rescues, hand-raises and ultimately rewilds orphaned elephants, black rhinos and other vulnerable wildlife. More than 320 orphaned elephants and 19 black rhinos have been raised through the programme, with 196 orphans now successfully reintegrated into the wild. The true measure of this work is the generations that follow: more than 94 elephant calves and grandcalves and two rhino calves are now known to have been born to animals raised and rewilded by SWT. But saving individual animals is only part of the solution. SWT operates across key ecosystems in Kenya through anti-poaching and de-snaring teams, aerial surveillance, mobile veterinary units, habitat protection and restoration, and community-based conservation initiatives. Working closely with the Kenya Wildlife Service, Kenya Forest Service and local communities, our teams protect wildlife, respond to emergencies, safeguard critical habitats and help create conditions in which both people and wildlife can thrive. Our mission is simple: to protect Africa’s wildlife and preserve habitats for the future of all wild species.
