Semiconductor manufactures are getting closer to the limits of minimization with current technology. This problem is blocking the development of faster and more efficient microprocessors for small end-user products such as mobile devices and personal computers. In order to tackle it, leading computer companies are looking for new technology such as miniaturized electro-optical components. Electro-optical technology is already used in large supercomputers and communication devices. Electro-optical computation increases processing capacity by 100 times and reduces energy consumption by 90%. Nevertheless, any of the currently known electro-optical components which could be integrated into silicon-based chips, are too large for smaller products. Nanoflute's technology closes this gap. Nanoflute core technology is a novel and unique miniaturization solution for siliconbased electro-optical components such as filters, WDMs, modulators, lasers and LEDs. This solution could be implemented using standard production methods. With no need for special production method, Nanoflute's electro-optical components could be easily integrated into commercially available silicon-based microchips. In addition, we developed and implemented a specially tailored algorithm to fit the designs of our components to predefined specifications. We tested the algorithm's outputs using FDTD 3D analysis and got satisfying results. The obtained design is significantly smaller than any other design we know of, and demonstrated very low levels of energy consumption (less than 10fJpb). According to those results, the new design will enable for the first time electro-optical computation in small end-user products such as mobile devices and personal computers.
