Chinese American International School educates students for embrace Chinese, become their best selves, and create their place in the world. In 1981, a group of multi-ethnic San Francisco Bay Area parents, educators and civic leaders implemented a compelling vision. They created a school with a bilingual, multicultural curriculum in English and Chinese to prepare children for an increasingly interconnected world. Shirley Lee, the Head of School for 15 years, began teaching four young students in two modest classrooms. CAIS was the first school of its kind in the nation and remains one of the few independent Preschool through eighth grade Chinese English dual language immersion programs in the U.S. This bold experiment has become a shining model of success. Today, the school enrolls 556 students. Under the leadership of Head of School Jeff Bissell, CAIS graduates continue to enter leading high schools and universities. Some alumni now study and work in China, while others enjoy exciting careers in the U.S. that draw on their bicultural education. The school now boasts a best-in-class 5.4 acre campus with state of the art Athletics, Arts, and Teaching and Learning facilities and abundant outdoor space on 19th Avenue in San Francisco.

Our mission is to counsel, connect, and champion boarding schools. TABS is a member association of over 200 boarding schools throughout North America and around the world. We deliver professional learning, timely data, and actionable insights; we provide opportunities for community and belonging within and throughout our membership; and we connect our schools with families eager to learn about the transformational value of a boarding school education.

SAIS is a membership organization of over 390 independent K-12 schools from 16 US states, the Caribbean, and Latin America, making SAIS the largest regional independent school association in the country. SAIS represents over 239,000 students with a virtual staff of 10. The mission of SAIS is to strengthen member schools by providing high-quality accreditation processes, comprehensive professional growth opportunities, and visionary leadership development programs.
