The practice was founded in January 1986 by the current principal, Peter Murphy, who qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1979, and was granted fellowship of the Institute in 1995. For the first twenty one years the firm was based in Swinton, before moving to its new home in Bolton in February 2007. Despite the continued growth of the practice, it has always been our aim to keep the firm "small and friendly ". Throughout the whole period in which the firm has been in existence, we have only employed a total of four staff, one of whom is still with us today. Having such a settled workforce has fostered a good relationship with our clients, who know from year to year who will be dealing with their affairs. We like to think that this sets us apart from many larger firms, where the constant turnover of staff fails to provide the continuity which our clients tell us is of such importance to them. At Murphy & Company we regard all our clients as being of equal value to the practice, whether they are sole traders turning over only a few thousand pounds per year, or corporate clients with an annual turnover in the millions. We strive to give all our clients the same level of service.
