At Lighthouse Community Public Schools (LCPS), we believe an exceptional education brings out each child’s unique light and potential. Founded in 2002, LCPS operates two high-achieving K-12 public charter schools — Lighthouse and Lodestar — serving nearly 1,300 students in East Oakland. With a vision of transforming our community through creating a family of exceptional schools serving youth and families in Oakland, our mission is to prepare diverse students for college, a career of their choice, and to be lifelong changemakers. Grounded in our core values of community, integrity, agency, love, and social justice and rooted in the EL Education model, LCPS is a leader in fostering innovative schools achieving exceptional student outcomes where each child is at the center of their own learning. LCPS will continue to increase its impact as we grow to a third site, ultimately serving 2500 Oakland students and their families. LCPS exists to counter persistent educational inequity that threatens our collective future; a beacon for public education where each graduate fulfills the promise of a better, brighter Oakland.

The University of Chicago Charter School is a neighborhood charter school on the South Side of Chicago, operated by the University of Chicago Urban Education Institute. Comprised of four campuses spanning all grades from early childhood through high school, UChicago Charter is a PreK to 12 superhighway that empowers students to RISE to excellence at every level, cultivating critical thinkers and leaders for success in college and in life. UChicago Charter provides students with rigorous instruction and comprehensive academic and social supports to accelerate learning, develop college readiness, and cultivate self-responsibility and leadership. Our campuses provide extensive instructional time, including a longer academic day and an extended day, week and year. We take a research-based approach to instruction, engaging students in ambitious intellectual work. Students undertake research projects in the humanities, sciences, and social sciences, beginning in elementary school and culminating with thesis projects in the senior year. Each campus envelopes students in a culture of high academic achievement, with explicit attention to issues of race, class, culture, and gender that affect urban schooling.
