MOTTO wound down in August, 2024. Before MOTTO, no gay app allowed people to verify their profiles, which led to safety and discrimination issues, as well as crude and toxic behavior enabled by anonymity. Our dating platform prioritized users’ time, energy, and mental well-being. Through thoughtful design and policy, we eliminated catfishing, reduced flaking and discrimination, and minimized aimless small talk by replacing anonymous interactions with high-intent, genuine, face-forward connections. We launched in Miami and New York, and for two years, grew the community to tens of thousands of members, facilitating countless dates, flings, and connections. Despite the positive reception to an elevated approach to gay dating, we grew too slowly to compete with Grindr and Hinge, and made the tough decision to close down. Building MOTTO with our dedicated team was thrilling, challenging, and rewarding. To everyone who built, contributed to, or joined the MOTTO community — thank you!
