MITOGEN is commercializing a medical device implant that induces the body to regenerate the cartilage tissue, or meniscus, of the knee. The technology has additional applications including spinal disc replacement, rotator cuff, ACL and TMJ repair. Mitogen recenly spun out of Columbia University and will begin human clinical trials. Successful trials in sheep, a large animal model recognized by the FDA as similar to the human knee, concluded that the regenerated meniscus had mechanical properties similar to the natural meniscus. 700,000 patients a year have knee replacement surgery due to Osteoarthritis (OA), a number that is expected to grow to 3.5M over the next 15 years.
