La Universidad de la República (Udelar) es la universidad pública de Uruguay y la más importante del país, contando con un total de 135 757 estudiantes de grado, según datos de 2018 del relevamiento continuo de estudiantes. Fue fundada el 18 de julio de 1849 en Montevideo, donde se encuentran establecidas las principales instituciones del país. Su primer rector fue el presbítero Lorenzo Fernández, y en la actualidad su rector es el economista Rodrigo Arim. La universidad estatal cuenta con dieciséis facultades y varias escuelas, campus regionales e institutos universitarios.
