The Melbourne School of Fine Woodworking is a not-for-profit club established, owned and run for members by the members and club administration. We offer weekly day and evening Tutor Groups where members design and make their own furniture under the guidance of a professional designer and furniture maker. Joining a Tutor Group is a great way for a beginner to learn the basics of furniture making and for more experienced woodworkers to extend their skills. We have a maximum of 7 in each tutor group and each student works on their own project at their own pace. We are committed to providing a stimulating environment where you can acquire the skills to design and make your own furniture. Our first emphasis is on the use of hand tools followed by thorough training in the safe use and effective operation of a range of woodworking machinery. The first week or two you may find that you spend the time working out what you want to make, designing it, what timber to buy, etc. all with the aid of your tutor. If you are a beginner, your tutor will suggest you start on something small, such as a box or side table so that you learn the basic joinery techniques.
