Patients who experience complex high risk surgery or are expected to heal slowly are often managed with a wound drain. Current drain output monitoring practices are manual - nurses (in the hospital) and patients (at home) eyeball the color and volume. Inaccurate data means drains are usually installed longer than necessary and nurses and patients miss early onset of complications - infection, leaks, excessive bleeding and blockages. This results in longer lengths of stay and increased readmission rates. Medsix plans to sell a disposable sensor with predictive analytics that can be attached to any wound drain to automate monitoring. This will address the needs of patients - detect complications earlier, remove drains sooner and reduce overall recovery time; providers - improve clinical decision making and create a standard for wound drain output; and payers - shorten length of stay and decrease readmission rates.
