Operation Gratitude began in 2003, when our founder, Carolyn Blashek, met a soldier who felt forgotten. From her living room, she mailed four Care Packages to deployed troops in Iraq. In the 20 years since, tens of thousands of Volunteers have delivered more than four million Care Packages, each one filled with donated products, handmade items, and heartfelt letters. These packages were more than supplies, they were tangible reminders that Americans care. Today, Operation Gratitude is one of the largest hands-on volunteer nonprofits in the country, demonstrating the power of grassroots participation in expressing national gratitude. We fulfill this mission by empowering communities, supporting local leaders, and preserving the stories that connect Americans with Service Members, Veterans, and First Responders through meaningful acts of appreciation.

We believe sports teach valuable lessons that last a lifetime. We are here to serve and encourage athletes, coaches, parents, kids, and those who just have a love of the game. Because at the end of the day, it’s not about how much the game can do for us, but what we can do for the game.

Many Americans don’t realize military benefits do not cover the cost of traveling home. Junior enlisted service members who complete 25 hours of volunteer service may be eligible for a no-cost round-trip flight of up to $1,000, helping remove that financial barrier while encouraging meaningful connection in the communities where they serve. The impact extends beyond a single flight. Volunteerism builds purpose, belonging, and community connection, while time with family strengthens the relationships that sustain those who serve. Together, these experiences support well-being, resilience, and readiness while strengthening families, communities, and the bond between the American people and those who serve.
